Hello all,
I thought I’d see if you could help me with this. Now lately I’ve been into the whole Death Metal area (Abhorrence, Aborted, Necrophagist, The Faceless, Nile, etc etc), but I still can’t find any that have ties with thrash. What I’m trying to find is a Death Metal band, like My Bitter End/All Shall Perish, that also have Thrash mixed in. And I’m talking THRASH, not this new shit that bands are trying to put out. Like original Thrash metal. (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Overkill, and Slayer) It’s almost impossible to find nowadays with everyone into either Death Metal, Metalcore, Hardcore, or Metal in general.
So if you could help me out here, that would be greatly appreciated!

Make no mistake.. it was important, it influenced a lot of the Metal Scene, and there WERE some great bands like Diamond Head, Iron Maiden and WitchFinder General in it……
Nay, my beef is with all the other bands, like Raven, that I want to like.. but then the screeching, womanly, gelded cat in too-tight spandex Robert Plant wannabe vocals kick in and I want to rip my ears off! You can be listening to Blazing Speed Metal, or Sludgy Doomy stuff… and the same boring, bad effeminate vocals kick in…… AAAAGGGGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I am not even saying they needed harsh Vox or anything… I mean, I love Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford and the like.. they all were high pitched and clean singers.. but they injected some testosterone into their sound at least, darn it!
MQ- Preferred decade fro Metal ( 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s)?
MQ2- Preferred Vocals, Clean, Harsh, Growl, Shriek, High Pitched, Low Pitched, etc?
MQ3- Favorite NWOBHM Band NOT named Iron Maiden?
BQ- Worst affront to Metal….. Big Hair, Spandex or Neutered Cat vocals?
@Fenris Wolf.. all good points… though as an old school MetalHead.. I actually have discovered IMO a HUGE amount of fantastic Metal once you get past the Mainstream and Metalcore stuff. I have a monster collection of positively METAlL, clean, brutal, and everything in between. I try to feature it in a series of Qs called Modern Metal Masterpieces. Plus… Modern Thrash is getting to be just about as awesome as it was in the late 80s.
Dude…. thank you. I thought I was the only one who did not "get" Opeth. Personally I find them boring as heck……..
well..here are 2 questions with bands I am currently digging….
and while it is an eclectic mix.. feel free to poke through my Youtube….
http://www.youtube.com/user/killerpeaches7
got pretty much all sorts of metal..and a few other things mixed in.
***And not to be too picky, but Judas Priest, technically was not NWOBHM… they had been putting out killer music long before then.
@Adam.. I dunno if you just feel the need to try to be contrary, or if you just only read part of what I am saying these days…..
Everyone of them could be awesome.. then the singer opens his mouth.. …
Were there a FEW bands that didn’t have lousy vocals? Yeah.. but we are talking less than 10%. And these are all bands I have WANTED to like since the 80s… ain’t like how many of the modern generation comes in with preformed opinions of "old" music.. this stuff was CURRENT when I tried to get into it!
Blitzkrieg ( great music.. vocals are WEEEEAAAAAAKKKKKKKK )
Angel Witch
Tygers of Pan Tang
Raven
Tytan
Vardis
Witchfynde
Persian Risk
White Spirit (sounds like POP music.. heck and they have Janick Gers playing for them! I love Janick!)

Just a stroll back in time for old school Metalheads, and a chance for the new generation to come to appreciate what came before:
OK, 1981 go the most votes, which makes things a little hard for me, as really IMO with the exception of the really well known bands like Ozzy, Iron Maiden and the like, 1981 was not the single best year for Metal. The problem? Well, we did have the NWOBHM… but in 1981 pretty much every band, no matter how great or heavy their music, had singers that sounded like gelded cats in too tight spandex. Thank goodness Thrash was about to arrive and inject some testosterone into Metal Vocalists. Anyhow, today I am going to feature an album from a band that was so Metal, they were not afraid to plaster a what looks like a baby seal on their album cover…..
RIOT- Fire Down Under (February 9th, 1981)
Fire Down Under
Swords & Tequila
Altar Of The King
Struck By Lightning
A Speed Metal band, they were pretty much America’s answer to NWOBHM bands, RIOT certainly borrowed a lot from their sound , and even some definite Zeppelin influences, then Americanized em. As high pitched vocalists go, I find Guy Speranza slightly less annoying than most of the era.
MQ: Thoughts and Opinions?
MQ2: Am I the only person that found most of the generic, screeching effeminate vocals of this era to be REALLY annoying?
BQ: What year next? anything before anything between 1970 – 1985 is fair game, though some years are just plain BAD for Metal.

Seriously, what the hell is up with that?
It’s all metal at the end of the day!
I can comfortably listen to classic metal bands such as Maiden or Motorhead, or Thrash Metal bands like Metallica & Megadeth, and nu metal bands like Slipknot, Korn, and even Limp Bizkit on occasions.
For your information, Richter, I’ve loved Iron Maiden since I was a child, because my mother is a HUGE Maiden fan. Also, I love Dio, Anthrax, Kreator and most of the other bands on that list (except Cannibal Corpse)
