Difference between Death Metal and Slayer-style Thrash metal?

How do you tell between a band so heavy like Slayer and true Death metal?

    Death metal bands usually have deep, growly vocals and distorted guitars

    Slayer, however, does not.

    The most obvious thing to look for would be the vocals. The vocals are distorted and growled in death metal while most Slayer styled band have screamed but clean vocals.

    Other than that, the guitars are usually much more downtuned and thus, heavier. The song structures are a bit more unconventional and the drumming patterns are more complex.
