Does anyone know of a Death Metal band with no vocals?

Posted on July 4th, 2010 by The Militia in Death Metal

My boyfriend loves Death Metal and Heavy Metal but I can’t stand the vocals or the lyrics. He said he doesn’t really care for the vocals either but doesn’t know of any just instrumental death metal or heavy metal like bands. Does anyone know of any?

Underrated Thrash Metal Bands #2: Artillery?

Posted on July 4th, 2010 by The Militia in Thrash Metal

Today, we have Artillery as our subject. Artillery is a Danish thrash metal band, formed in 1982. Though seasoned thrash veterans will almost certainly know of them, Artillery is a band that deserves more attention than it receives.

Those who know Artillery will describe them as technical thrash with Eastern-flavored melodies. This is a sound they pretty much perfected on their magnum opus, "By Inheritance".

Artillery easily has earned their spot as one of my favorite thrash bands, and I hope that those of you who haven’t given them a serious listen already will now.

Now for some songs –

The Almighty – from "Fear of Tomorrow"

Terror Squad – from "Terror Squad"

Khomaniac – from "By Inheritance"

Cybermind – from "B.A.C.K."

10,000 Devils – from "When Death Comes"

MQ: Thoughts on the songs/other misc thoughts on Artillery?
MQ2: Had you given Artillery a serious listen before encountering this question?
BQ: If you have heard of Artillery before, what is your favorite song and your favorite album by them?
BQ2: Thoughts on Eastern-flavored metal in general?
When I said eastern-flavored metal, it doesn’t have to be thrash.
Death Angel? I think I’ll have to take you up on that.
Well, yeah, they are European, but their melodies have that distinct Eastern taste.
Just to clarify what Eastern means here – it refers to the middle-Eastern feel to their melodies. Listen to Khomaniac; it is probably the best example I could give you.
Annihilator shall be getting their turn as well. Alice in Hell is still an album that I still play pretty regularly.
Nile is indeed a great band. I’m going to be seeing them in October, and I’m pretty excited about it. \m/

any suggestions in listing to Thrash Metal (a challenge to Thrash Metal fans)?

Posted on July 4th, 2010 by The Militia in Thrash Metal

Hi all, i am trying to get into listing to thrash metal, however, i am a very picky listener :P i am looking for some suggestions from the thrash metal experts here based on what i like and listen to (i am interested in slower/heavier riffs though):

Metallica:

i am a huge fan of Metallica, i have and love all their albums (except the last 2, S.T Anger and Death Megnatic, i hate them) Top fav is "And Justice For All"

Megadeth:

i started to listen to Megadeth when S.T Anger came out (wonder why) however, i only like some songs , around 12 songs only, and can stand the rest :P

order by fav:

1- Five Magics
2- Rust in Peace… Polaris
3- Holy Wars… The Punishment Due
4- Angry Again
5- Sweating Bullets
6- Countdown to Extinction
7- Symphony of Destruction
8- Dread And The Fugitive Mind
9- Peace Sells
10- Tornado Of Souls
11- Trust
12- Use The Man ( only the first half of the song :S )

i didn’t like the rest of their songs and can’t stand the speed, i have listened to all of their albums btw

Testament:

listened to all of their albums, only like these songs (order by fav) :

1- Disciples Of The Watch (the newer version,an AWESOME song!)
2- True Believer
3- Careful What You Wish For
4- Eyes of Wrath

Exodus:

listened to all albums, only like these 2 song (can’t stand the rest, too much screaming):

1- Shudder To Think (great song)
2- Shroud Of Urine

Anthrax:

listened to all of their albums, only liked these two (can’t stand the rest, too fast):

1- I Am The Law (EXCELLENT SONG!)
2- NFL (an ok one)

am sorry for being so picky, as you can see, i lean towards slower/heavier? songs, i like speed some times, but not too much, i hope you can help me in finding some songs that could be similar to the list above. again sorry for being so picky, but that is why i called it a challenge :P

Is the Japanese melodic death metal band shadow famous?

Posted on July 4th, 2010 by The Militia in Death Metal

I want to know if they’re widely known, If they’re like metallica famous, Megadeth famous, big in the underground, big for their genre, or not too well known. The band shadow that wrote arrival at the last quarter.

What are your top 5 thrash metal drumming performances?

Posted on July 4th, 2010 by The Militia in Thrash Metal

I am being specific with Thrash, as alot of times, I feel the drumming is abit underrated (compared to death metal) in the genre as there are alot of good drummers in thrash bands.

If you can, don’t just name your fav thrash songs, but ones with good drumming that showcases, not only speed, but skill as well.

Mine

Toxik – Technical Arrogance

-has abit of everything, Speed, some different tempos, interesting fills
Dark Angel – Darkness Descends

Can’t exclude Mr. Hoglan from this list. He obviously got better later on with bands like Death, but this still shows his skill
Demolition Hammer – Aborticide

-pretty brutal stuff, but there is definitely some nice fills, drum work in this song
Sepultura – Refuse/Resist

- the different brazilian style drumming infused with thrash…
Megadeth – Take no Prisoners

not my fav megadeth song by any means….but the drum work is excellent

MQ: What are your top 5 thrash metal drumming performances?
BQ: How would you rank the drumming in my 5 picks?
***nice list Leprosy!

oh yeah, Rust in Peace…Polaris has some great drumming
***St0n3;D : i was deciding whether fo put Morbid Saint on or not…had to cut out quite a few quality drummers

Melodic death metal with deep vocals?

Posted on July 4th, 2010 by The Militia in Death Metal

I’m looking for some melodeath with deeper, growling vocals. Some screams are fine, but I’d like the vocalist’s main style to be low growling rather than anything else.

Thanks!
